We were contacted to install an A-frame handrail at a farm in Woking to provide edge protection while an asbestos sheet was replaced on an agricultural barn.
The client needed the work completed at short notice and required the edge protection to be installed by a local scaffold company serving Woking. We arranged for our scaffolders to attend promptly so the replacement work could proceed without unnecessary delay.
The completed handrail measured approximately 2.4 metres long and was built on top of an internal single-storey storage area within the barn.
We supplied the scaffold for two weeks at a cost of £350.
This was a relatively small scaffold installation, but it had a very specific purpose.
The work involved replacing one asbestos sheet on the agricultural building, so there was no requirement for a larger scaffold providing access across the barn.
Instead, we used an A-frame arrangement to protect the work area. This provided the required fall prevention as part of our scaffold edge protection service, with the handrail focused only where needed.
This kept the installation focused on what the client actually needed without extending the scaffold unnecessarily into the surrounding space.
The location presented a different setup from a conventional external scaffold, as the handrail had to be assembled on the existing raised section inside the barn.
The A-frame configuration allowed the scaffold tubes to be arranged on this level while working within the available space.
We also supplied a ladder for access from below, with the handrail running along the open side at the top.
This meant the scaffold could be concentrated at the upper level, rather than building a larger structure from the barn floor.
We built the structure from individual scaffold tubes to suit the job’s dimensions and position.
Our scaffolders used the following:
The two longer tubes formed the horizontal rails, while the remaining components created and braced the supporting frames.
The angled tubes visible in the photographs form part of this support arrangement, with the shorter tie-backs incorporated into the completed structure.
Using individual scaffold tubes allowed the team to build the edge protection to suit the space available inside the barn.
The speed of the installation was key to this job.
The asbestos sheet needed replacing because it posed a health and safety hazard, so the client wanted to proceed promptly.
Following the initial enquiry, we arranged for our scaffolders to attend and complete the scaffold within 24 hours.
Although this was much smaller than many of the scaffolds we install, the urgency was no different. The requirement was clear: provide the necessary fall protection so that the client could move forward with the work.
Installing the scaffold internally also meant working around the building’s existing layout.
The photographs show the raised area beneath the agricultural barn roof, with equipment and storage units occupying the space below. This was an established working and storage environment rather than an empty construction area.
The compact arrangement kept the scaffold confined to the work area, with the supporting tubes and braces contained within the available space.
