Scaffolding costs depend on the structure’s size, the access required, and the work being carried out. See real prices from completed Mays Scaffolding projects, learn what can affect the cost and request a quote for your own job.
The projects below show actual prices for scaffolds supplied by Mays Scaffolding, including the hire period and work involved.
These are examples, not fixed rates, as every quotation is based on the scaffold and access required for that particular job.
No single price applies to every property. A quotation must account for the equipment required, as well as the time and work involved in installing the scaffold safely.
The scaffold dimensions directly affect the amount of equipment needed.
A short scaffold giving access to a chimney or small section of wall differs greatly from several elevations around a large building. Greater height can also mean additional lifts, standards, ledgers, bracing, and other components.
The scaffold must provide suitable access for the work being carried out.
Some projects only require a working platform at the upper level, while others need boarded platforms at several heights. The required platform depth can also vary depending on the work and the building.
The building’s position can affect how easily scaffold materials can be moved to the installation area.
A clear frontage with nearby vehicle access differs from a rear elevation where equipment must be carried through a property, along a narrow passage, or over a longer distance.
We factor these site conditions into the quotation.
An extension, conservatory, lower roof, or other structure below the work area can affect how the scaffold must be arranged.
Where equipment cannot be supported in the usual position, we can span scaffold structures over conservatories and other obstructions to create the required working area.
Not every project requires a conventional scaffold running parallel with a building.
The work may instead call for a chimney scaffold, cantilevered section, access tower, staircase, temporary roof, or another arrangement tailored to a specific access requirement.
The price reflects what the job actually needs.
Knowing why the scaffold is required helps us establish where trades need to work and which parts of the building need to be accessible.
Roofing Work
Roofers may need safe access using scaffolding for roofing work, especially along the eaves or where different roof elevations must be reached.
Painting and Decorating
External decoration can require access across windows, fascias, walls, and other parts of an elevation, sometimes with working platforms at several levels.
Chimney Repairs
Where work is concentrated around a chimney, the scaffold may need to extend above roof level and provide a suitable platform around the area being repaired.
Solar Panel Work
Access may be required along the roof edge to install, maintain, or remove solar panels.
Commercial Projects
Warehouses, shops, offices and other commercial buildings can involve larger elevations, multiple working levels or access arrangements planned around how the premises are used. For contractors needing commercial scaffold installations, working platforms can be positioned around the work area while accounting for access to the premises.
Temporary Roofs
A temporary roof involves considerably more than providing a working platform. The structure must create a covered area over the building or part of the project and is priced according to its size and specific requirements.
A scaffolding quotation is not simply a rental charge for the equipment.
The price includes the scaffold required for the project, transporting the equipment to site, installing the structure, and returning to dismantle it when it is no longer required.
The quotation will also allow for an agreed hire period.
If you already have an idea of how long the building work is expected to take, let us know when requesting your quotation so we can consider the anticipated hire period from the beginning.
The hire period is one part of the quotation, but it does not necessarily determine which scaffold will be more expensive.
For example, one of our Esher projects cost £500 with four weeks’ hire, while a scaffold on Southgate Road in London cost £600 with one week’s hire.
The difference reflects the individual installations, not simply the number of weeks each structure remained in place.
The amount and type of scaffold required significantly affect the initial cost, which is why comparing different projects purely by a weekly hire figure can be misleading.
If the scaffold needs to remain beyond the hire period stated in your quotation, you can arrange extended hire for the project.
Two houses can appear very similar but still require different amounts of scaffolding.
The key question isn’t simply the property’s size, but which parts need to be reached. Our scaffold access for homeowners can cover a single house elevation with one working level or extend around more than one side of the building with platforms at several heights.
The work itself also matters.
A roofer may need access along an entire roofline, while a repair to one particular area of the same property could require a much smaller structure.
For this reason, we price the access actually required for the work, rather than applying a standard charge based only on the property type or size.
Some projects can be contained entirely within private property. Others may require part of the scaffold to occupy or extend over a pavement or another area of the public highway.
When this happens, additional requirements may apply, and you will typically need permission from the relevant local authority.
This is particularly relevant to properties in London and other built-up areas where the front of a building may sit directly beside a pavement.
Tell us if you think your scaffold may need to use public space when requesting a quotation. We can then consider the location and proposed arrangement when assessing the project.
You don’t need to know the technical scaffold specification before contacting us.
Tell us about the work you are planning and where access is needed. We can then establish what is required.
The following information is particularly useful:
This information helps us quote for the scaffold your project actually requires, rather than relying on a generic estimate.
Photographs can be very useful when assessing a project, particularly when they clearly show the elevation requiring access and the surrounding area. Whether photographs alone provide enough information to prepare a quotation will depend on the individual job.
The hire period forms part of the quotation, but the overall price must also account for the equipment, transport, installation, and dismantling.
For that reason, scaffolding costs should not be viewed simply as a weekly rental rate.
Not necessarily. The price depends on the scaffold required and the site conditions.
Where rear access is restricted, we will account for the additional handling involved when preparing the quotation.
It can. A conservatory beneath the required working area may require a different scaffold arrangement to provide access above it.
The cost will depend on the property, the area that needs to be reached and the structure required to provide that access.
Your quotation will set out what is included in the price. Our pricing includes returning to dismantle the scaffold after the agreed hire period and once the structure is ready to be removed.
If your work overruns the agreed hire period, contact us before the end of the hire.
Any extended hire arrangements will depend on the individual project and the additional period required.
Where a scaffold needs to occupy or extend over a public highway, additional costs will apply.
These can vary by location and relevant local authority, so they need to be considered for the individual project.

Providing the property location, work details, and photographs (where available) helps us understand the access required.
If you are planning roofing, decorating, repairs, refurbishment, or any other building work, send us the property details and the area you need to access.
