We installed approximately 43 linear metres of scaffold edge protection at Groves Farm, Colworth, Chichester, PO20, as part of a building demolition project.
Before demolishing the building, the client needed to remove the existing roof sheets. The required edge protection tubes were installed by our specialist Chichester scaffolding erectors, with scaffold guard rails positioned around the roof perimeter while this work was carried out.
The scaffold height varied from approximately 3 metres to 5 metres around the building. The installation used 16ft tubes for the standards, with 16ft rakers and other smaller tubes used to tie back the rakers.
The scaffold was supplied with one week’s hire for a total cost of £2,500.
The main requirement for this project was approximately 43 linear metres of triple guard rail around the roof. With contractors working at roof level, the scaffold roof edge protection handrails prevented falls from the exposed edges, reducing the risk of a fall from height. The three horizontal rails created protection at different heights along the roof edge.
Photographs taken from roof level show the guard rails continuing around the exposed edges of the building, protecting the area where the removal work was taking place.
The standards ran from ground level and extended above the roofline to support the three horizontal tubes forming the guard rail.
From outside the building, the arrangement shows the vertical tubes continuing beyond the roofline to form the supporting framework for the edge protection.
To provide additional stability, 16ft scaffold tubes were installed as rakers on every other standard.
The rakers ran diagonally from the scaffold framework towards ground level and are clearly visible around the outside of the building. Each section with a raker was also tied back to the uprights using 5ft scaffold tubes.
This produced the triangular bracing arrangement visible along the elevations and provided additional support to the standards carrying the guard rails above roof level.
We added further support to each standard fitted with a raker.
Our scaffolders attached a 2–3ft tube using a right-angle coupler approximately 500mm below the top of the roof. The tube was positioned so that it butted against the building.
These short tubes provided an additional support point at the upper part of the scaffold, separate from the longer rakers and their 5ft tie-back tubes.
A scaffold ladder provided safe access to roof level.
The ladder extended above the guard-rail level, allowing the workers to access the roof safely. A ladder access gate was also incorporated into the edge protection at the access point.
Once at roof level, the contractors could carry out the roof-sheet removal with safety guardrails installed around the full perimeter.
As the work was being undertaken on the roof itself, there was no requirement for boarded scaffold working platforms around the building’s elevations for this project.
