Scaffold for House Decorating, River Close, Shoreham-by-Sea - Hire Cost £500

A team of decorators contacted us to arrange scaffolding for a two-storey house in River Close, Shoreham-by-Sea. They needed safe access to the external walls and windows overlooking the patio. Our scaffolders erected a two-lift scaffold measuring approximately 6 metres long by 4.2 metres high, with a five-board-wide working platform.

If you need scaffolding for exterior decorating, repairs or maintenance, our scaffolders can help. As an experienced scaffolding contractor in West Sussex, we provide safe access solutions for properties across the county, with free quotations for all scaffold installations.

Setting the First Lift Over the Doorway

A pair of glazed doors opened from the house straight onto the patio, directly beneath where the scaffold needed to stand, towards its right-hand side. To keep that doorway in use, the first lift was set at 2.2 metres high, giving enough headroom for people to walk in and out of the house underneath the boards. The second lift went in at around 4.2 metres high, placing the upper platform just below the highest row of windows, while the large windows beneath them sat just above the first lift’s boards.

Alongside the raised first lift, an additional standard was added to the run. This allowed the sway brace to pass through three sets of standards, rising from the patio to the first lift, with the second sway brace continuing in the opposite direction from the first lift up to the second.

Platforms and Handrails

We boarded both lifts out five boards wide, giving the decorators space to move along the full 6 metre run. The outer edge of the first lift had two handrails fitted. On the second lift, the customer asked for an extra safety measure, so we installed a third handrail above the usual pair. Stop-end guardrails closed off the ends of the platforms, and a trapdoor was fitted at the right-hand end of the top lift.

Getting Up to Each Lift

Access started at the left-hand end, where a ladder ran from the patio to the first lift. A yellow safety gate was fitted across the opening at the top of the ladder. To reach the second lift, a ladder was positioned at the opposite, right-hand end, rising from the first lift to the upper platform. Both ladders were secured to a tube built into the scaffold. With the ladders at opposite ends, anyone heading for the top platform walked the length of the first lift before making the second climb.

Setting Up on the Patio

The ground beneath the scaffold was a patio laid with irregular paving stones. The standards stood on base plates set on yellow plastic tredda plates, which spread the scaffold’s weight over a wider area of the paving. At the left-hand end, the scaffold stood alongside a raised, brick-edged planting bed, while on the right it finished close to the wall of the neighbouring house.

Tubes and How They Were Used

Around 53 tubes went into this scaffold, across six lengths, with each size given its own job on the structure:

  • 21ft tubes x 13: six were used as standards, and the other seven formed the ledgers and handrails along the 6-metre length.
  • 16ft tubes x 5: three were used as standards and two for the handrails on the first lift.
  • 10ft tube x 1 and 13ft tube x 1: joined together to make up one longer standard.
  • 13ft tubes x 2: used for the two sway braces running diagonally across the face.
  • 8ft tubes x 6: used for ledger bracing across the width of the scaffold, between the ledgers and standards.
  • 5ft tubes x approximately 25: used for transoms, stop-end guardrails and the ladder framework.

Hire Period and Cost

The scaffold was hired for six weeks at £500. Anyone planning exterior decorating can visit our painting scaffolds page to learn how decorators use them.
