Repointing & Rendering Scaffold Over Two Conservatories, Bernard Road, Worthing - Cost £3,100

We installed scaffolding at a two-storey property on Bernard Road in Worthing, giving contractors access to carry out brickwork repointing and render repairs.

The property featured red brickwork at ground-floor level, dark timber framing with white infill panels across the upper front elevation, and white render on the rear upper wall.

With 2 separate conservatories beneath the areas requiring repairs at the rear and on the right-hand side of the property, we used scaffold beams to span these structures and provide working platforms above them.

Scaffold Size and Height

The scaffold ran for 48 linear metres around the property. It stood between 3.5 and 4.5 metres high over two lifts, with working platforms ranging from 4 to 6 boards deep. We set up ladder access at the front of the house, with the ladder rising from the driveway to the working lifts.

12-Metre Beam Over the Rear Conservatory

At the back of the house, we built a 12-metre beam section to span the conservatory. We used two pairs of 6 m x 450 mm deep beams, joined to create the full 12-metre length.

A 1-metre square structural tower carried one end of the beams. At the other end, the beams connected to the main scaffold, passing through two pairs of standards with structural transoms fitted to the underside of the beams to carry the load.

The beams also served as the working platform. The boards for this section were laid across them, above the glazed conservatory roof.

Plan Bracing the Beams

The beams were plan-braced every 2 metres using 8 ft tubes, with each brace fixed to the beam uprights with double couplers. These horizontal braces tied the two beams together along the full span, so they worked as one frame and could not move sideways independently.

Working Past the Rear Bay Window

A bay window projected from the rear wall, so the beams had to be set 1 metre away from the wall to clear it. That left a gap between the beam platform and the walls the contractors needed to reach.

To bring the platform back in, 8 ft transoms were run from the beams towards the house. A 16 ft ledger was fixed to the underside of these transoms to support them. Pull-back tubes were then added using 10 ft tubes, each fixed with a swivel coupler to the top of a puncheon and a double coupler to the 16 ft ledger. This held the extended transoms in place and gave a safe working platform close to the wall.

14-Metre Beam on the Right-Hand Side

The second conservatory, on the right-hand side of the house, was spanned with a 14-metre beam section made from one 8 m and one 6 m x 450 mm deep beam joined together. This beam formed the scaffold’s inside ledger, so no inside standards were needed over the conservatory. Standards on the neighbour’s pathway supported the outside ledger.

The beam was anchored to the house with Apollo ties every 4 linear metres. For extra stability, we fixed two 3 ft tubes to the standards with double couplers, butting against the next-door property and bracing the scaffold within the narrow gap between the two buildings.

Chimney Table Lift

To reach the chimney, we built a 2.4-metre-long table lift, approximately 6.5 metres high over the three lifts, with a 4-board-wide platform. We fixed 16 ft puncheons from the 14-metre beam below to reach the required table-lift height. As an extra safety precaution, we installed a single handrail at the rear of the chimney.
